Hi Alan,
Thanks for your message. To help resolve the issue with Ian’s Excel Add‑in, please work through the steps below — these address the most common causes reported in previous tickets.
1. Confirm the add‑in file actually exists
Excel cannot load the add‑in if the file is missing.
- Open the folder %appdata%\Microsoft\AddIns
- Look for ieaaddin.xlam
- If the file is missing, reinstall the add‑in or download the manual version from the website
2. Check whether the file is blocked
Windows may block downloaded add‑ins, preventing Excel from loading them.
- Open the folder %appdata%\Microsoft\AddIns
- Right‑click ieaaddin.xlam → Properties
- If you see an Unblock checkbox, tick it and click OK
- If there is no checkbox, the file is already unblocked
3. Re‑enable the add‑in inside Excel
Excel sometimes disables add‑ins silently.
- In Excel go to File → Options → Add‑ins
- Next to Manage, choose Excel Add‑ins → Go
- Ensure Ian’s Custom Excel Functions is checked
- Restart Excel
4. Follow Microsoft’s official add‑in installation guidance
If Excel reports that the add‑in cannot be loaded, or if installation fails, please follow the steps in Microsoft’s article: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/add-or-remove-add-ins-in-excel-0af570c4-5cf3-4fa9-9b88-403625a0b460
5. If you originally used the installer, try the manual version instead
If the installer reports that Excel is open or antivirus blocks the installer:
- Ensure that Excel has been closed
- Download the manual (no‑installer) version from https://www.skinner.co.za/downloads/download/2-ians-excel-add-in/2-ians-excel-add-in-no-installer
- In Windows Explorer, place the ieaaddin.xlam file in the %appdata%\Microsoft\AddIns folder
- Open Excel and then add the add-in manually via File → Options → Add‑ins → Browse
If possible, please let me know which step resolved the issue.
This helps me improve the support material for future users.
Kind regards,
Ian
