WinQS ASCII import error was created by sineadaw
Hi Ian,

A few times now the ASCII import has failed after importing the preliminaries, my whole excel freezes and crashes. I get a run-time error 214741....

And I have gotten a visual basic automation error too.

I'll try get the rest of the first error next time it happens.

Thanks!

Hi Sinead,

A couple questions to start the troubleshooting process:

  1. What is the structure of the ASCII file you are importing? Preliminaries only, or preliminaries followed by bill of quantities?
  2. Does the run-time error occur on only one or two files imported, or does it happen to all files that you import?
  3. If the ASCII file contains both preliminaries as well as boq, try exporting only the boq (not preliminaries) to an ASCII file. Are you able to import this file successfully?

Kind regards,
Ian

Hi Ian,

Trying the addin again (have the whole office hooked! :))

Still getting a frozen screen when importing BOQs with sections.

What is the structure of the ASCII file you are importing? Preliminaries only, or preliminaries followed by bill of quantities? Prelims and two section BOQ (basement and offices)
Does the run-time error occur on only one or two files imported, or does it happen to all files that you import? Only happens on BOQs with sections.
If the ASCII file contains both preliminaries as well as boq, try exporting only the boq (not preliminaries) to an ASCII file. Are you able to import this file successfully? Works on the first section, the second gets stuck with the same error.

do you know why it gets stuck?

thanks :) :side:

Hi Sinead,

Thanks for your support! B)

I suspect that the freezing is as a result of multiple spaces and/or non standard characters in the descriptions. A couple of users have reported this problem.

I am busy looking into this and hope to have a solution soon. Keep an eye on your inbox for a notification. ;)

Cheers,
Ian
